Putting First Things First

Several months ago, determined to become more deliberate about promoting the business side of my art making, I decided that 2019 would be the year. I have thought about this for a very long time, as long as I can remember, most likely too long. In recent years I have studied strategies, visited galleries, written artist statements, developed a website and spoken to students about the importance of doing all of these things. This month, I realized that I’m still drawn to producing the art more than I am pushed to market it. The conflict is that while connecting others with my work and receiving feedback – including sales of my paintings, is an important part of the process, it is simply unfamiliar.
As January comes to a close, I recognize the progress that I have made to increase my presence on Facebook and Instagram. I’ve also created and shared images that simulate my work installed in various home and office settings. I am taking another step today by writing and sharing this blog post, while realizing that my first passion is to create more art. I’ll continue to seek a balance between making a business and making art. I’ll share my journey through this blog at juliehoganart.com and on social media. If you are a subscriber to my email list, I’ll also send you updates on significant milestones and events.
